Etiquette

As a kumdo practitioner you will soon become familiar with what is expected of you at training. The way you should act (or not act), how you should view others, respecting them and the training itself, not to mention your attitude to your sword, be it real or wooden. All of these things will come to fit into place. However, there are some general guidelines that can be followed:

  • Arrive on time and be ready to begin class.

  • Strict attention is to be given to the teachers at all times.

  • When addressing the head Master, the Korean term ‘Kwanjangnim’ (head of school) is to be used. When addressing other teachers, the term ‘Seonsaengnim’ (teacher) is used.

  • Be respectful of others and maintain a proper attitude in the dojang.

  • No free sparring without permission from the teacher.

  • Self defence techniques are not to be applied out of the dojang unless circumstances involving your safety, or the safety of others, are overriding.
